My Switch To Mac

Getting Out Of The Windows Paradigm

September 1st, 2005 · 2 Comments

After learning about Apple’s Mac Mini “test drive”, I thought it would be appropriate to read some reviews of the Mac Mini.

I found a very interesting review from Technology Insider that I thought I should share.

So is the mini a maxi value? For me, clearly, no. When I consider that a good deal of my time is spent running applications like Disk Defragmenter, Scandisk, Norton AV, Windows Update and Ad-Aware–none of which are available for the Mac platform–it doesn’t make sense for me to “switch” to a Mac at this time. But will Apple’s famous marketing team be able to sell the the emperor an invisible computer anyway and turn the mini into a maxi hit? That’s the question that remains to be answered.

While I understand Mr. Lopez’s point of view, I don’t quite agree with it. Most long-time Windows users are accustomed to spending much of their time maintaining their computer.

Part of the Macintosh philosophy, and one that is very refreshing from my point of view, is that the computer just works.

Since the Mac runs OS X Tiger and NOT Windows, it does not need to run Windows Update. (The Tiger operating system has a software update feature built in.)

Also, because there is little known adware, spyware, and viruses for the Macintosh platform, few Mac users use programs such as Norton Antivirus and Ad-Aware. Such programs do exist, though, and are readily available.

I think Mr. Lopez has been working with PCs under Windows for so long that he “assumes” he “must” spend time maintaining a Mac if he switches. On the contrary, -not- having to constantly deal with defrag, Norton AV, ad-aware, etc., etc., is enough for me to switch. But since I’m already on the Mac side after using PCs for almost 20 years, trust me, I’m staying with my Mac!

Also, something that is worth mentioning is that the installation of applications in OS X is so simple, especially when no restarts are required. Uninstalling an application? Simple: move it to the trash! No complicated remove procedures and questions about whether or not it is safe to delete this or that file.

Mr. Lopez…please switch!! It doesn’t matter what Mac you buy, just buy one! Once you try a Mac, you won’t go back!

I agree! I don’t know what they’re teaching at DeVry these days, but I’d be happy to teach them all the difference between Windows and a Mac! :)
