I read a lot of RSS feeds. And I do a lot of writing. So I have been looking for a newsfeed reader that is perfect for what I do.
I found several good reviews of RSS readers on Macworld.
But I really did not like any of them.
Part of the problem– for me, anyways– is that I have a 20 inch screen, but I do not feel like I have a lot of desktop real estate.
When I am in my full-blown workday routine, I usually switch between three programs: a RSS reader, a web browser, and Ecto.
I could switch between programs on my Mac, let their windows all overlap, and just use the Expose feature. But I wasted too much time hitting keys and switching between windows. And I need to switch back and forth between programs on my Mac a lot, making it even more of a pain.
I really wanted to like NewsFire. It is a beautiful looking Mac RSS reader. But, for me, it just took up too much desktop real estate.
If I was really creative with my window sizing, I might have been able to fit Newsfire in. The problem is that I would need the program’s window to be big enough to let me read feeds that had the whole articles, but small enough to leave room for Firefox in case the feed only contained an excerpt.
So I began looking for a solution that integrates right into Firefox.
And then I found Sage, a free extension for Firefox. And, so far, I like it.
Unfortunately, Sage does not include some of NewsFire’s cuter features.
For example, Sage does not check feeds automatically. And Sage does not play cute sounds when it discovers new items.
Sage also does not sort the feeds based on the number of new items. This was a feature I grew to like from NewsFire, but one that often overwhelmed me.
What RSS reader do you all use? How do you keep up with news feeds?
