My Switch To Mac

iPod and Linux

September 27th, 2005 · No Comments

I recently discovered the “iPod Linux Project“, an open source project committed to porting linux onto the iPod.

It works.

Imagine using your iPod and a regular old microphone to record studio-quality audio. Or sitting on a commuter train and playing Othello, Pong, Tetris, or Asteroids. All this and more is possible when you install Linux on your third-generation or earlier iPod. Best of all, one soft reset, and you’re back in Apple’s iPod operating system, listening to your tunes.

While I love technology, I’m not really the kind of guy that would venture into this kind of arena. Unless there was a reason.

In my case, iPodLinux allows me to record high-quality sound on my iPod.

The application: a virtual recording studio.

Imagine walking around a conference hall with this tool. You can interview anyone, pick and choose clips later– and record it all on your iPod.

Pretty neat, huh?

As someone that’s looking into options for his first podcast, this seems to be a great– and very inexpensive– option.

I’m planning on attending a conference next month. I’ll keep you posted on my trials.
