CNN reports that the Japanese recording industry had been working on getting a mandatory tax - on all new iPods. According to the article, the tax would have added as much as 5% to the cost of a new iPod.
After debating the issue for about a year - and facing strong public opposition - the government committee was unable to reach an agreement on the plan.
It failed to pass.
