My Switch To Mac

Anyone Had Their Mac Fall Asleep On Them?

March 23rd, 2006 · 8 Comments

My wife’s got a 17″ 1.8Ghz iMac G5 that is starting to fall asleep on her now and again. She’ll be in the middle of working on something, and the computer will go to sleep on its own.

Has anyone had this happen to them?

I’ve read about something similar here but I’m dreading what we might have to do to get this issue corrected. We live pretty far from civilization and so it seems that any fix is one that will take weeks, especially if it has to be shipped off.

Have you tried going into System Preferences and setting “put computer to sleep” on NEVER? Try putting “put display to sleep” on NEVER to. Put everything on never and see if that helps.

This article from Apple may help your iMac that falls asleep when it should not. Read the WHOLE article.

Charlie - no we did not try to set sleep to never - not yet anyways, as it seemed more of component issue than a software issue. Also, what I read about the fan noise in the posts on MacInTouch sound similar as my wife’s Mac makes substantially moire noise than mine does and we both own iMac G5s.

Thanks for the article! I haven’t had the chance to reset it yet as we’ve been away but it sounds exactly like what we are experiencing.

Also, another thing you can try is in System Preferences in Print and Fax, go to the Faxing button, click on it and put a check mark next to Receive faxes on this computer. A Mac can not go to sleep when this is checked since it has to always be awake in case a fax comes in. It would not b able to receive a fax if it was asleep. If all this fails, go to Apple forums and post your problem. I find them to be very helpful as people will give you good suggestions to your problem. Should you need to know what forums to use, I will give them to you if needed.

    Good luck.

Tried everything - including setting the Mac to receive faxes - but it went on quite a bout tonight and my wife can’t work more than one or two minutes.

I suspect there is an issue with overheating inside the computer.

I agree…it sounds like an overheating issue to me to. I do not know if you have Apple Care for the 3 years of service, but if you do, use it. I think I remember that you live far out. More then 50 miles from an Apple store because if you live within 50 miles of an Apple store and have Apple Care, they do come to your house for a service call. More then 50 miles away and you will have to ship it to get it fixed. I wish you luck. If you have to ship it make sure you make a copy of ALL important info on your Mac. I hear that Apple will ship back a fixed Mac and sometimes all your info like photos, favorites, documents etc. are not there. The hard drive was wiped cleaned and the OS was re installed.

Charlie, I e-mailed my local Mac dealer. We bought my wife’s machine last fall so I believe it falls under warranty as it has been less than one year. Here’s what he said:

I believe, based on the symptoms you’ve described, that your iMac G5 has suffered from a typical logic board failure. You would, however, need to bring the unit down for an official diagnosis. The part would then be ordered, if required, and then repaired once it arrives. Turn around time is typically 3 days.”

That three days doesn’t include the three hour drive each way or shipping, but it’s not the end of the world.. :)

I am very happy for the good news that you received. When I bought my iMac in Nov. ‘05 I also purchased Apple Care which gives me 3 years support for the actual computer and phone support to and since I live less then 50 miles from the Apple store in SoHo Manhattan, New York, I could request that the technician come to my house the day after I call. I like that peace of mind. Hopefully I will never have to use it but I like having it just in case. 3 days for you is very good and I wish you lots of luck. A good posting for you here on your website would be telling your readers of your whole experience, telling them about your call to your local Mac dealer, what they told you and how the repair goes and when it is finished how it all went. Kepp us posted. :-)
