My wife’s iMac just fell asleep on its own again, after about six hours of fairly heavy use.
This is the first time it has shut down on its own since the warranty service. As this was the original problem when we sent in the machine for warranty service, I am not certain why the problem has resurfaced.
And I’m not happy either.

My wife’s iMac G5 is still terribly noisy, even after the warranty repair. The fan noise may be slightly lower, but it makes a heck of a lot more noise than it ought to.
The shop that had performed the warranty service said they ran the computer for two hours and did not hear any noise. Perhaps they didn’t actually run any software? Once my wife started using the computer again, the noise started again. I had hoped it would be better, but it is not.

We sent my wife’s iMac in last week for repairs after a string of problems with the computer shutting down prematurely and making excessive fan noise.
This was the first time I had sent a computer in for warranty service, and I must admit I am not keen on the idea of losing a computer for a week or two, especially when in the PC world you can usually just find the part you need and keep on going.
After diagnosis, the local shop revealed that our iMac G5 had a defective top fan assembly. The fans were working inadequately - and making tons of noise. Internal components, including the hard drive, were not being cooled as much as they should have been.

We finally got my wife’s iMac off for repairs. It took a little longer than I had expected - we’re making do until the repairs are made.
Interestingly enough, I performed the OS X Software update prior to sending off the computer, and upgraded to OS X version 10.4.6 yesterday morning just before packing away the computer. Once the installation was complete and the computer went to reboot, it would not start back up again.
